When are Passports Necessary? Passports are globally recognized forms of identification. They are issued by a national government to show standardized information about the passport holder including their full name, photograph, nationality, date of birth, sex and place of birth. Until recently passports were not necessary for some international travel. For example, US residents could travel to Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean Islands simply by showing their driver's license as ID. However, with the tightening of borders to counter terrorism, passports are now essential for almost all international travel. One exception to this rule is travel within countries in the European Union. The 24 countries in Europe which signed the Schengen Agreement all accept national ID cards in place of passports for crossing borders. Visas are not generally necessary. The United Kingdom is not part of this agreement so European travelers can cross between many countries on the continent of Europe but still need a passport to enter and leave the United Kingdom. For travel between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Eire residents of the United Kingdom do not need a passport; Members of the European Economic Area (EEA) require a national ID card and all other nationalities require a passport. Another exception to passport regulations is that US citizens need a passport when flying to Canada, but if arriving by land or sea a Government issued ID card or birth certificate is sufficient proof of citizenship. This rule is likely to be tightened during 2009. Basically it is important to either carry a passport when you travel, or check very carefully what documents are necessary if not. There are several types of passport which may be issued. The diplomatic passport is issued to consuls and diplomats for work-related travel; service passports are issued to government employees for work-related travel and ordinary or tourist passports are the most common passports of all. Occasionally temporary passports are issued, particularly as a short-term solution if a passport is lost or stolen. Family passports may also be issued, but travel is restricted. A family passport will list all the family members but they can then only travel with the main passport holder. Inside a passport, besides the data pages, there are many blank pages which are used by immigration agencies to stamp a traveler's arrival date, departure date and visa status. This indicates how long a visitor may stay in the country and must be adhered to. The latest passports are now biometric and have a radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip embedded in the passport. The chip holds details of the passport holder, a digital photograph and other relevant data. Biometric passports aim to speed up the process of immigration, reduce identity fraud and prevent the use of false passports. Passport cards have recently been introduced in the US which are credit card-sized documents for those who frequently cross the border between the US and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda by road or sea, for example for daily employment. Passports are issued usually in English and French, but some countries add their own language as well. Normally one passport is allowed per citizen and when it expires it must be surrendered to obtain a new replacement. Passports last a maximum of ten years as photographs need to be updated and changes noted. It can take several weeks for a passport to be issued, and often countries will not accept visitors who have less than 6 months remaining on their existing passport. It is therefore essential to keep a check on your passport expiry date and allow plenty of time for a replacement to be issued before traveling. Passports are becoming more and more expensive as they become more sophisticated, and need increasingly advanced technology to read and process them. Finally, some countries require visas for entry. Visa rules vary between countries, depending upon their individual agreements. Visas may be obtained at the airport before traveling or upon arrival in a foreign country. However some countries require the pre-purchase of a visa. This may require an application being submitted to the Embassy along with the passport and payment. Travelers are carefully vetted, and if approved the visa is stuck into the passport, along with security features to avoid tampering. It is always wise to check the visa requirements well in advance of traveling, as visas may take several weeks to be issued. |

Air Travel Tips Air lines are becoming increasing competitive in their flight costs, but increasingly they are looking to charge for any and every extra service they can. Gone are the days when you could pack what you wanted, how you wanted and any excess weight was waived. Nowadays the suitcases you choose, what you pack and keeping within the weight limits are all import factors to avoid extra charges. When choosing a suitcase or bag, check the empty weight. Suitcases can weigh as much as 12lbs (5 ½ kg). When the maximum allowable per bag is 40lbs (18kg), this severely restricts the amount of luggage you can carry. Similarly, biggest is not always best. A large suitcase, fully packed with clothing will weigh far more than the weight allowance leaving you to either pay an excess baggage fee or pack things so loosely that they all slide around and crumple. Choose a lightweight, medium-sized suitcase which is well-made and has wheels. Baggage weight limits vary between airlines quite considerably. Always check the luggage restrictions before packing. The information may be on your ticket, or you can get up-to-the-minute advice from the airline website. International flights generally have a higher allowance than internal flights. Some no-frills airlines charge for each and every bag. Other airlines limit each passenger to 2 check-in bags with a maximum of 50lbs (22kg) per bag. Even one pound excess can incur a surcharge of $50 or more, so use the bathroom scales to check each bag before leaving home. Once the bags are at the airport they all look pretty much the same. It is a good idea to buy colorful bags or use luggage straps with bold colors or names printed on them. This makes the bag easy for you to identify. It also avoids another passenger picking up your bag by mistake, and it helps airlines to identify your luggage should it go astray. Ensure that your bag has a secure label attached with your name and contact details, and consider writing your name and home address on the inside of the suitcase in permanent ink too. Hand luggage is similarly restricted by both size and weight. Keep your essentials and valuables in your hand luggage, but remember, all liquids and gels must be packed in your check-in luggage. Minimal amounts of lip gloss, toothpaste etc. can be secured in a Ziploc bag and declared at security check points. Your carry-on luggage should include essential medications, reading material and gadgets for the flight such as inflatable pillows and ear plugs. It is a good idea to carry a change of underwear in case your luggage is delayed, together with contact addresses and a photocopy of your travel documents. As security increases and checks become more meticulous, more time must be allowed for the inevitable lines at security check points. Arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight time and preferably 3 hours before international flights. Flight times change, security may be heightened, taking even longer, and you may want time for duty free shopping and a cup of coffee before boarding. Airlines generally board rear row passengers first for an efficient and speedy boarding process. If someone jams the aisle at row 5, no other passengers can proceed to the rear of the plane and the whole boarding process takes far longer than necessary. Respect the calls for boarding row by row and everyone will benefit. Of course, first class and business class passengers are allowed to board at any time. During the flight, observe the flight attendant’s instructions with regard to the use of electronic equipment, when to recline your seat and always keep your seatbelt loosely fastened in case of sudden turbulence. From time to time, walk along the aisle to the restrooms if only to stretch your legs, and do regular foot exercises to keep your circulation flowing. For overnight flights, a blindfold and earplugs or the use of headphones with soft music may obscure distracting noises and lights. A good sleep shortens the journey and allows you to arrive feeling refreshed and ready to face the day. Bon Voyage! |
